Decontamination
and Decommissioning Management
A major area of expertise at Auxier & Associates
(A&A) is health physics support for nuclear
facility decontamination and decommissioning
(D&D). We have extensive practical experience
in assessment of facilities and sites being
decommissioned for programs of the Nuclear Regulatory
Commission (NRC), Department of Energy (DOE),
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and properties
contaminated with NORM (naturally occurring
radioactive material), mixed fission products,
activation products, and TRU (transuranium isotopes).
A&A is familiar with the planning, operational,
and regulatory aspects of environmental programs
and responsible agencies. We have provided a
range of service to clients including management
of decommissioning activities, development of
procedures and protocols to survey and remediate
facilities, independent oversight of D&D
projects, interpretation and presentation of
survey results. A&A has provided operational
health physics support during remediation, and
have interacted closely with engineers, construction
management, and regulatory agencies to promote
efficient use of resources.
Capabilities:
Services available through Auxier & Associates
include developing decommissioning plans, planning
survey strategies, conducting radiological surveys
for all phases of decommissioning, developing
and managing remedial action programs, evaluation
of waste management alternatives, and preparation
of documentation to demonstrate effectiveness
of the decontamination and decommissioning actions.
Because we have managed or coordinated site
remediation activities in multiple states we
bring solid operational knowledge to the planning
process. Throughout the process, we work closely
with the client and the responsible regulatory
agency to achieve a timely, cost effective,
and technically acceptable outcome to the process.
